For decades, the first day of football practice looked the same for Dwight Lundeen: a drive to the field and another season leading the Becker Bulldogs.
This year is different.
After 57 seasons as Becker High School’s head football coach, Lundeen is beginning his final season on the sidelines, bringing an end to one of the most successful coaching careers in Minnesota high school football history.
Lundeen started Becker’s football program in 1970 and built it from the ground up. More than a half-century later, the Bulldogs have become one of the state’s premier programs, winning four state championships and more than 400 games under his leadership.
The early years, however, were far different from the powerhouse program Becker has become.
“We were going to start slow,” Lundeen said. “I had to make every kid. I started with 20 and ended with 20.”
