Against the odds: Here's how one deaf nurse found her place in the Emergency Room.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — She’s deaf — and she’s an emergency room nurse.

In a job where every sound can matter, Bethany “Bebe” Baker has found a way to care for patients, overcome barriers and prove that being deaf does not mean you cannot do the job.

For Bebe, getting to the emergency room was not an easy journey.

“I applied for about 16 positions in the Jacksonville, Saint Augustine area. And HCA Memorial Hospital took a chance on me, and I've been here ever since,” Baker said.
