As Thursday night’s football season opener vs. Eastern Illinois approaches, University of Minnesota athletics director Mark Coyle sounds less concerned about predictions and preseason hype and more focused on something he believes matters far more: the culture inside his program.
The 2026 Vegas over/under for Gophers’ wins is 6.5. The Gophers don’t play Ohio State and Oregon, the preseason consensus top teams in the Big Ten.
Coyle’s excitement stems not from rankings or projections, but from watching months of work finally lead to game week.
“It seems like forever ago that we were celebrating that bowl win in Arizona,” Coyle said. “You go through the offseason, then fall camp, and now the student-athletes finally get their opportunity. I’m excited for them, for Coach Fleck, and for our fans.”
