WASHINGTON — Would you eat a cookie made out of plastic?
Researchers at Southern Illinois University Carbondale are asking that question as part of research they are conducting into what they call “µBites," edible cookies created as a byproduct of breaking down plastic waste.
The research, which is being presented at the meeting of the American Chemical Society in Chicago this week, focuses on a special gene-edited species of yeast. The microbes, modified by gene-editing CRISPR technology, were reprogramed to eat polyethylene terephthalate, or PET, a commonly used plastic.
